One of the marquee matchups of the Premier League’s ninth round features Chelsea taking on Newcastle United.

Both teams have started the season with mixed results. Chelsea has won half of their eight matches and drawn twice, while Newcastle has recorded three wins and three draws. As a result, Chelsea currently sits seventh, with Newcastle in twelfth, heading into this encounter.

Chelsea enters the match with a full squad at manager Enzo Maresca’s disposal, while Newcastle faces a tougher situation. Their main concern is the absence of first-choice goalkeeper Martin Dubravka, who sustained an injury earlier this month. Additionally, Kieran Trippier is still recovering, and key players Sven Botman, Jamaal Lascelles, and Lewis Miley remain sidelined from last season.

Ahead of the match, Chelsea’s manager Enzo Maresca expressed satisfaction with how his players are independently adapting to tactical shifts on the pitch:

“Undoubtedly, the players are recognizing tactical adjustments on their own. I see it not only on the field but also in team meetings with video reviews. You can observe that they’re starting to identify solutions themselves.

As a coach, that’s one of the most rewarding moments because you see that they’re learning, and they’re very appreciative of it.”

Meanwhile, Newcastle’s manager Eddie Howe commented on Chelsea’s transfer strategy, praising Maresca for effectively implementing a tactical structure:

“They practically have two starting lineups. They’ve built real depth if you look at the transfer work they’ve done over numerous windows. Now, they’re starting to stabilize, showing consistency in their team choices.

Credit is due to them for bringing in a very capable coach who’s instilled this tactical structure. We’re aware the next two games will be a significant test for us.”

Both managers are expected to field their strongest available lineups. A win for Chelsea could propel them into the Premier League’s top five, while a Newcastle victory would see them leapfrog today’s opponents in the standings.
