Chelsea sensationally lost to Middlesbrough in the first semi-final of the EFL Cup

On Tuesday, 9 January, the first EFL Cup semi-final match between Middlesbrough and Chelsea took place.

The hosts were more active in the opening few minutes, but Chelsea took control of the ball. They failed to score, moreover, Chelsea conceded in the 37th minute, Hackney scoring a goal. Before the break, Cole Palmer had two chances to equalise, but the Blues striker missed his chances.

After the break, Chelsea again had more possession and looked for chances in attack, but Middlesbrough managed to survive the match and win a narrow 1-0 victory. Thus, Chelsea lost in the first leg of the EFL Cup 1/2 final. The return leg will take place in a few weeks, on 23 January.
