Chelsea has suffered a prolonged loss of a defender due to injury
Left-back Chelsea's Mark Cucurella has been sidelined for an extended period. The Spaniard is set to spend a minimum of three months in the infirmary due to an ankle injury, as reported by the Daily Mail.
It's reported that Cucurella underwent surgery. Chelsea's medical staff will conduct further examinations on the player shortly to establish a rehabilitation program.
The 25-year-old footballer sustained the injury during a Premier League match against Everton on December 10th. He was absent from the game against Sheffield United.
Cucurella joined the London club in August 2022 from Brighton, with the Blues paying €65 million for the defender's transfer rights. Since then, the Spaniard has featured in 45 matches for the aristocrats, providing two assists. In the current season, the Spanish defender has participated in 12 matches under Pochettino's management without registering any goals or assists.
Cucurella joins several players of his position in the infirmary. Earlier, injuries sidelined Reece James, Ben Chilwell, and Wesley Fofana.
Previously reported, Chelsea plans to undergo a squad overhaul in winter, potentially bidding farewell to multiple players.
The London club currently occupies the tenth position in the Premier League standings after playing 17 matches, accumulating 22 points.
