Amidst escalating hostilities between opposing supporters, tumultuous scenes broke out, culminating in a potentially fatal situation that was narrowly averted by the astute actions of one onlooker.

Witness Saves Espérance Fan from 30-Meter Fall

Masongo, a witness to the shocking events, recounted a harrowing moment when he helped save an Espérance fan from a deadly fall.

"There was a major rush among fans. Espérance supporters were trying to move to the other side when I saw a man hanging," Masongo told Times.

At first, the distressed fan panicked, believing Masongo was trying to push him.

"He pleaded: 'Please, don’t do this, I have three children.' But I reassured him, telling him, 'I won’t let you fall.'”

With the fan losing his grip, Masongo acted swiftly

"I grabbed his arm and told him: 'Try to lift your knees, pull yourself up.'"

After several attempts, the Espérance supporter managed to climb to safety.

“The height was dangerous—about 30 meters. If he had fallen, he would have either died or been left paralyzed,” Masongo revealed.

Stadium Safety Concerns Grow

Despite the emotional rescue, questions arise over crowd control at CAF competitions. The incident highlights potential safety risks that CAF may now be pressured to investigate.

For Masongo, however, it was not an act of heroism but a moral duty.

“I couldn’t let someone lose their life.”
