Cerro Porteño Suspends Sergio Araujo After Serious Misconduct Incident
Sergio Araujo’s future at Cerro Porteño is in serious doubt after a disciplinary breach led to his indefinite suspension from the first team, according to Versus. The Paraguayan club issued an official statement confirming both financial sanctions and the player’s removal from professional duties. They also warned that a repeat offense could result in contract termination.
Following the team’s 1–0 loss to Palmeiras in the Copa Libertadores, head coach Diego Martínez addressed the situation publicly. He described it as “a serious infraction” and said he had discussed it directly with the player. Despite calling it a private matter, the club’s firm response indicates deeper concerns about the striker’s conduct.
Local media reported that Araujo, formerly of Boca Juniors, arrived intoxicated at a training session. He allegedly had a bruised eye, was visibly agitated, and acted erratically, prompting veteran goalkeeper Roberto Fernández to tell him to leave. On his way home, Araujo reportedly lost $600, which further complicated the incident.
Cerro Porteño board member Miguel Carrizosa confirmed the disciplinary action and emphasized the matter should not distract from the team’s campaign. “There was an off-field situation, and the coaching staff made the decision. How long it lasts will be evaluated,” he said.
The club’s official statement emphasized that any recurrence will trigger more severe penalties, including the potential termination of Araujo’s contract.
