Mexico’s greatest sporting idol, legendary boxer Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez, was a special guest at the historic Azteca Stadium in Mexico City.

Details: The undisputed super middleweight world champion arrived at the arena together with his wife Fernanda Gómez well before kickoff, eager to personally support Mexico’s national team in their opening home World Cup match against South Africa.

Canelo’s appearance in the stands sparked incredible excitement among the fans, instantly raising the intensity of the already electric pre-match atmosphere.

But Canelo’s visit wasn’t just about cheering from the stands. FIFA entrusted Álvarez with a special and prestigious role at this sporting celebration. Canelo was officially named the first ambassador of the tournament’s unique award: right after the final whistle, he will step onto the pitch to personally present the “Player of the Match” trophy, chosen by fans through live voting.

Reminder: South Africa’s national team made a colorful entrance to the World Cup opener, arriving to the sound of music.
