Cecilio’s Role Still Unclear as Martínez Manages His Return
Following Cerro Porteño’s narrow win over Sportivo Trinidense, head coach Diego Martínez addressed Cecilio Domínguez’s status, as the star midfielder continues to come off the bench. According to Versus, the Argentine coach stated that Domínguez is being eased back gradually after recovering from injury.
Cecilio entered the match early due to Gastón Giménez’s injury and went on to score the game-winning goal. “The idea wasn’t for him to play so many minutes. We planned a gradual return. At one point, I even thought about taking him off again,” Martínez admitted during the post-match press conference.
The coach acknowledged Domínguez’s impact and stressed the importance of having key attacking options in form. However, he also noted that, despite being available for Cerro’s next match, Domínguez will be evaluated carefully due to the physical strain he endured. “He made several explosive and intense efforts. We need to assess his recovery before deciding if he starts,” Martínez explained.
The situation underscores the coaching staff’s cautious approach to reintegrating injured players, balancing performance with long-term fitness.
