CECAFA's Full Support Secures Waberi's Candidacy for the Upcoming FIFA Elections

The Council of East and Central African Football Associations (CECAFA) has officially endorsed Hassan Waberi for the FIFA council elections in March 2025. The endorsement came during CECAFA’s ordinary general assembly held in Juba, South Sudan, where representatives from 11 regional member associations gathered to back Waberi, president of the djibouti football federation, in his bid for a seat on the FIFA council.
CECAFA president Wallace Karia praised the progress made by the region over the past year and stressed the importance of supporting Waberi, who's currently the vice president of the Confederation of African Football. Waberi’s candidacy is seen as opportunity to enhance East Africa’s representation on the world football stage.
The Assembly also highlighted several key regional football events, including the first CECAFA Beach Soccer Championship in Kenya 31 May to 7 June 2025 and the return of the CECAFA senior challenge cup after five year hiatus. The Assembly meeting was historic as it marked the first time it was held in South Sudan.
The unified position of the east and central african football association stresses the importance of regional cooperation and support for waberi, as the 2025 FIFA council elections are scheduled to take place in Cairo on 12 March.
