Carlsen joins esports organization—what’s the story? x.com/TeamLiquid

Renowned Norwegian chess grandmaster Magnus Carlsen has officially joined the esports organization Team Liquid. At first glance, a chess champion and esports might seem like an unlikely pairing—but there is a clear strategy behind the move.

Details: Carlsen will represent Team Liquid at the Esports World Cup, as this year’s tournament lineup includes chess. The organization had already bolstered its roster by signing American grandmaster Fabiano Caruana, making their chess division a formidable force.

Reminder: The Esports World Cup chess tournament will take place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, from July 31 to August 3, 2025. The prize pool for the chess event alone stands at $1.5 million. Alongside chess, the competition will feature games such as CS2, Free Fire, PUBG Mobile, EA FC 25, Rocket League, and others. Previously, Carlsen had a public dispute with FIDE president Arkady Dvorkovich.
