Cardoso’s Tactical Brilliance Propels Sundowns Towards Another Title
Miguel Cardoso’s strategic approach has propelled Mamelodi Sundowns to an 18-point lead at the top of the Betway Premiership table after 20 games. While Orlando Pirates could reduce that gap to six points if they win their four games in hand, Sundowns remain in firm control, closing in on an eighth consecutive league title.
Adapting to Every Challenge
Despite not having joined the Brazilians at the beginning of the season, Cardoso has had an indisputable impact. With his stellar tenure—which includes decisive wins over Soweto powerhouses Orlando Pirates (4-1) and Kaizer Chiefs (1-0) in a single month—the 52-year-old has silenced his detractors.
His strategy has changed according to the situation. He deployed his best lineup against the Pirates and dominated the game from beginning to end. But weariness and injuries necessitated a patchwork defense against the Chiefs, which led to a more conservative strategy—while still producing an important victory.
“I make a great effort to be clever,” Cardoso said after the victory over Chiefs. “There’s always proactivity in how you approach a match. You have a plan, but you also adjust based on what the game presents.”
Players at the Heart of Success
Despite his tactical acumen, Cardoso credits the players for executing his vision. “I try to help the players as much as I can, but I’m human, and I make mistakes. Fortunately, my players work hard to cover them,” he admitted.
At halftime against Chiefs, his message was clear: “We go till the end as a team. Let’s understand the moments, stay together, and everyone must give their best.”
Coping with a Grueling Schedule
Sundowns’ packed fixture list remains a challenge, but Cardoso refuses to dwell on it. “We play again on Wednesday, then Saturday, and it continues. It’s not about complaining—we must adapt and keep winning.”
Comparing football to an orchestra, he concluded: “You can’t always play the violin—sometimes you must pick up the drums. The key is making music in your own way. In the end, we must win!”
