Cape Town City’s Struggles Continue as Ertugral Departs Following Gallants Defeat

Cape Town City’s woes in the Betway Premiership deepened after suffering a 1-0 defeat to Marumo Gallants at Athlone Stadium on Saturday. Gabadinho Mhango’s lone goal handed the Citizens their 12th league defeat of the season, extending their winless run to nine matches.
Ertugral’s Frustration
Speaking after the match, coach Muhsin Ertugral lamented his team’s lack of composure in the final minutes.
“In the end, we all panicked in the last 15 minutes. Our changes were done out of hope, and then the game went even more down for us. We didn’t score, and they took their one chance,” he said.
Ertugral also acknowledged failed tactical adjustments, saying, “In the second half, we tried with two strikers and pushed Petrus further up, but it didn’t work. We need to help the boys—they’re totally devastated in the dressing room.”
Ertugral’s Departure Confirmed
Following this loss, Cape Town City announced the mutual termination of Ertugral’s contract. Appointed initially as a technical director before stepping in as interim coach, he managed just three wins in 14 games, with eight losses and three draws.
“After technical discussions, the club and Muhsin Ertugral have agreed mutually to part ways,” read the club’s statement. “The decision comes in the best interest of the club as we look to end the 2024/25 season as strongly as possible.”
Cape Town City’s Current Position
The Citizens now sit in 13th place with 23 points from 23 matches, just two points clear of the relegation zone. The club will now search for a new head coach as they attempt to turn their season around.
