In January 2025, elections will be held for the head of the International Olympic Committee. The nomination procedure is over, and now we know who will compete for the post.

The IOC press service has released the list of candidates, there are seven of them:

  • Faisal bin Hussein - IOC member since 2010
  • Sebastian Coe - former British track and field athlete and president of World Athletics.
  • Kirsty Coventry - former Zimbabwean swimmer, two-time Olympic gold medallist.
  • Johan Elias - president of the International Ski and Snowboard Federation.
  • David Lappartien - president of the International Cycling Union.
  • Juan Antonio Samaranch Jr. is the son of former IOC President (1980-2001) Juan Antonio Samaranch.
  • Morinari Watanabe - president of the International Gymnastics Federation.

In January 2025 candidates will make public their programmes, and the election procedure itself will take place at the 143rd Session of the IOC, which will be held from 18 to 21 March 2025 in Greece.

We will remind, earlier it was reported that the incumbent President of Poland Andrzej Duda is ready to compete for the post of IOC President.

The current IOC President Thomas Bach, who has held the post since 2013, in August 2024 said that he would not fight for the post again.
