Canada beat Venezuela in a penalty shootout to reach the Copa America semi-finals
Last night, at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, the second quarter-final match of Copa America took place, featuring Venezuela and Canada.
The teams displayed a fairly even yet intense match, leading to a logical outcome. Early in the first half, after a throw-in, Lille striker Jonathan David made an excellent run down the flank and crossed to Nashville player Jacob Shaffelburg, who successfully slotted the ball into the net.
In the middle of the second half, José Rondón capitalized on an error by the Canadian goalkeeper. After a clearance from their own penalty area by Yon Aramburu, Rondón struck from midfield, lofting the ball over the goalkeeper and into the net.
The match continued until the final whistle, after which the teams decided the outcome through a penalty shootout. It is worth noting that due to the heat, in the event of a draw in Copa America, there are no overtimes, and the game proceeds directly to penalties, except for the final.
Venezuela shot first and missed their second attempt, but Canada followed suit. Similarly, neither team converted their fourth shot. The deciding moment came on the sixth attempt when Venezuela missed again, and Canada capitalized, winning the match.
