Can the United States Become the Best Team in the World? Pochettino Sparks Debate
Mauricio Pochettino, coach of the United States national team, asserted that the country has the potential to become a football powerhouse and could dominate the sport in the coming years. In statements to English media, the Argentine coach claimed that the growth of soccer in the U.S. is unstoppable and that "in five or ten years, we can undoubtedly be the number one in the world."
According to AS newspaper, Pochettino also spoke about the pressure his team will face as hosts of the 2026 World Cup and the influence of Donald Trump, who has returned to the presidency and has shown interest in the national team's performance.
"We know there will be enormous pressure and now our president likes to exert pressure, but that's welcome. It will give us the adrenaline we need to feel," the coach noted.
The former Chelsea and Tottenham manager also made a critical observation about FIFA President Gianni Infantino following a comment made during a recent visit to the White House. In that meeting, Donald Trump asked Infantino if the United States could win the 2026 World Cup, to which the Swiss official responded affirmatively. Pochettino, however, considered that response hasty and unfounded, suggesting that Infantino lacks a deep understanding of the team.
"I was disappointed by his response. He should have said: 'You need to ask your great coach, Pochettino'," the Argentine joked.
Under Pochettino's leadership, the United States aims to be a serious contender in the tournament it will co-host with Mexico and Canada. With a rising generation of players and growing interest in soccer, the coach remains optimistic about the future, though he avoids promising an immediate triumph.
