CAF Women’s Champions League: Lekie FF lose to Mamelodi Sundowns
The Uniffac side lost to the South Africans (2-1) on Wednesday 4 November at the Suez Canal Stadium in Ismailia, Egypt, on Matchday 2 of Group A of the CAF Women’s Champions League.
Lekie FF held out against Mamelodi Sundowns for a long time before succumbing in the dying moments. Mamelodi Sundowns took the lead just before half-time thanks to Refilwe Tholakele, who scored in the 42nd minute. The South Africans held onto this lead until the restart.
Trailing in the score, however, Lekie FF did not give up. The Cameroonian players continued to press and were eventually rewarded in the 84th minute. Tim Shalom Makoma levelled the score, reigniting her team’s hopes.
But the Cameroonian joy was short-lived. Four minutes after the equaliser, Ivana Yakana scored an own goal in the 88th minute, handing Mamelodi Sundowns the victory (2-1).
Following their 0-0 draw against FUS Rabat on matchday one, the Cameroonian side suffered their first defeat in the competition. They will now need to bounce back in their third match, scheduled for Saturday against Masar.
A win will be essential for Lekie FF to keep their hopes of qualifying for the next round alive.
