The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has reduced the sanction imposed on Morocco midfielder Ismael Saibari after his controversial incident involving Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy during the AFCON final.

On Tuesday, CAF made headlines with a shocking announcement, overturning the result of the Africa Cup of Nations final and stripping Senegal of the title, awarding it instead to Morocco.

Alongside the reversal of the final result, CAF also reviewed several disciplinary actions taken against players involved in incidents during the match. One of the most talked-about cases was that of Saibari, who was previously fined $100,000 for taking the towel of Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy during the game.

In a surprising turn of events, CAF has now rescinded the hefty fine. Instead, the PSV Eindhoven midfielder will face a reduced punishment in the form of a match suspension.

According to CAF’s official statement:

“The sanction imposed on Mr Ismaël Saibari (Player No. 11 of the Morocco National Team) is amended to a suspension of two (2) official CAF matches, of which one (1) match is suspended.

The fine of USD 100,000 imposed on Mr Ismaël Saibari is set aside.”
