CAF President Motsepe Insists Morocco as Host of 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially confirmed that Morocco will host the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), putting an end to speculation surrounding the tournament’s venue.
In recent weeks, reports had suggested that Morocco could step away from hosting duties following the aftermath of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. The uncertainty opened the door for other nations to express interest, with South Africa publicly indicating readiness to step in if the North Africans withdrew from the arrangement.
However, CAF president Patrice Motsepe has reassured stakeholders that Morocco remains committed to staging the competition as originally agreed in the Executive Committee meeting in Tanzania. According to Motsepe, several countries were eager to host the tournament, but time constraints made it difficult to reconsider the decision.
“There are discussions and a lot of competition. Morocco came forward to help us. There were many countries that wanted to host this event and, since we didn't have enough time, our margin was really limited. As of now, there is still a commitment with Morocco because the other interested countries wanted to change the dates. And we don't want to change them because there are also the qualifiers for the Women's World Cup.”
