CAF President Announces Plan to Expand AFCON to 28 Teams
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced plans to expand the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) to 28 participating countries in what could become one of the most significant changes in the competition’s history.
CAF President Patrice Motsepe revealed the proposal during a recent press briefing in Tanzania, outlining the governing body’s vision for the future of African football’s flagship tournament. According to Motsepe, the revamped AFCON would also be staged every four years as part of a broader strategy to strengthen the competition’s global standing.
“The AFCON as we know it now is one of Africa’s most important sporting events,” Motsepe said. “We want to increase it to 28 countries, and, as we have said, hold it every four years. This will allow more nations to compete at the highest level, showcase their talent, and contribute to the growth of African football.”
