CAF decision: The Senegalese government calls for an investigation into allegations of corruption
The Senegalese government has spoken out following the controversial decision by the African Football Confederation’s Appeals Committee.
There is widespread outrage in Dakar following the decision to strip the Lions of Teranga of the Africa Cup of Nations title and award it to Morocco. In a statement released, the Senegalese authorities have expressed their dismay at a decision they describe as unprecedented and of exceptional gravity.
The Government believes that this measure violates the very foundations of sporting ethics. Senegal insists that the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final took place under fair conditions and that the result achieved on the pitch cannot be called into question by an administrative decision. In light of this situation, the Senegalese government has officially requested the opening of an international investigation into allegations of corruption within the governing bodies of the Confederation of African Football.
This unprecedented decision, of exceptional gravity, directly contravenes the cardinal principles underpinning sporting ethics, foremost among which are fairness, loyalty and respect for the truth of the pitch. It stems from a manifestly erroneous interpretation of the regulations, leading to a grossly illegal and profoundly unjust decision. Senegal cannot tolerate an administrative decision that erases commitment, merit and sporting excellence. Senegal unequivocally rejects this attempt at unjustified dispossession. It calls for the opening of an independent international inquiry into allegations of corruption within the governing bodies of CAF.
