‘But the Pitch Never Lies’ – Okoronkwo Responds to CAF Snub
Super Falcons striker Esther Okoronkwo has reacted to missing out on the final shortlist for the CAF Women’s Player of the Year Award, saying real recognition comes from what happens on the field.
Okoronkwo, who many fans and analysts expected to see in the top three, shared her thoughts on Instagram, thanking supporters across the continent while hinting at disappointment. She wrote, “I remain grateful for the support across Africa… Recognition is earned not awarded… the pitch never lies.”
CAF announced the final three on Thursday, with Nigeria’s Rasheedat Ajibade making the list. However, the shortlist surprised many after leaving out standout performers like Okoronkwo and Zambian star Barbara Banda.
The final nominees—all players from the WAFCON final—are Rasheedat Ajibade (PSG/Nigeria), Ghizlane Chebbak (Al Hilal/Morocco) and Sanaa Mssoudy (AS FAR/Morocco).
