The renovation of Burkina Faso’s iconic August 4th Stadium has become a focal point of controversy, with allegations of corruption, fraud, and embezzlement surrounding the project. Public prosecutor Blaise Bazié detailed the case, revealing significant irregularities in the contract awarded to the consortium of SIFA SA, AL-MOUNIA, and TRUVA INSAAT.

Investigations by the gendarmerie and the ASCE-LC uncovered overbilling, falsified documents, and possible conflicts of interest. Four key individuals are under indictment, including Dominique Nana, the former Minister of Sports, and Abdoul Ajusso Ouédraogo, head of public procurement. Two companies involved in the project also face legal action.

The stadium, suspended by the CAF in 2021 for poor conditions, was to undergo a 15-billion CFA franc overhaul. However, an inspection in 2023 revealed substandard work, prompting President Ibrahim Traoré to call for an inquiry.

This case highlights systemic issues in managing public funds and reinforces the need for transparency. As the judicial process unfolds, Burkina Faso’s citizens await accountability for the mismanagement of a national treasure.
