Two familiar names are missing from Liverpool's European plans: Federico Chiesa and Wataru Endo have been left out of the Champions League squad.

Details: Liverpool have officially submitted their squad for the league phase, and there is no room for either Chiesa or Endo. For the Italian it is a painful repeat: he was also omitted from last season's initial list before a long term injury to Giovanni Leoni opened a back door via UEFA's replacement rule.

Chiesa's position has looked increasingly fragile: the 28 year old has been sidelined since a pre season knock against Como and is only due back in training in late September, while the big money arrival of Bradley Barcola has swollen the number of senior wingers at Anfield to five. Endo's case is different but no less final, the 33 year old has not played since a foot injury in February, a blow that forced him to miss Japan's World Cup and retire from international football this summer. With squad rules limiting the List A places and youngsters pushing through, both veterans have been squeezed out, and for Chiesa, who turned down summer exits, questions about a January move will only grow louder.

It's worth noting that last year Chiesa was eventually re-registered after Leoni's ACL injury, but UEFA only allows such a switch for long term absences, so the Italian needs misfortune elsewhere to get a second chance again.

Reminder: Cherif Ndiaye announces his retirement from international football.
