Brazilian Clubs Brace for European Raid After Club World Cup
As Europe’s transfer window opens, top Brazilian clubs face mounting pressure to hold on to their most valuable players. After standout performances in the Club World Cup, several names—Jhon Arias, Wesley, Richard Ríos, Wallace Yan—are now prime targets for European sides.
Jhon Arias is the centerpiece. The Colombian attacker from Fluminense had a stellar tournament and is now being eyed by England’s Wolverhampton and clubs from both Europe and Saudi Arabia. Despite past rejections of bids over €10 million, this time the final word may come down to Arias himself. He’s under contract through 2028 and is currently the club’s highest-paid player.
Flamengo’s 21-year-old right-back Wesley is another hot prospect. Roma has reactivated its interest after previous talks when he nearly joined Atalanta. The Italian club has spoken with Wesley’s camp but hasn’t submitted a formal offer yet. Flamengo wants at least €30 million, and Wesley reportedly prefers Roma, even with interest from Manchester City, Everton, and Brighton.
Flamengo is also working to extend the contract of Wallace Yan, the team’s top scorer at the Club World Cup. Wolverhampton is interested, but the club is keen to keep him. Meanwhile, midfielder Gerson has already been sold to Zenit for €25 million in a deal agreed before the tournament.
Palmeiras midfielder Richard Ríos is also drawing attention. According to Gazzetta dello Sport, Roma is preparing a €30 million bid. With Leandro Paredes returning to Boca Juniors, coach Gian Piero Gasperini sees Ríos as a key midfield addition.
Botafogo, on the other hand, has already seen a wave of departures. Nottingham Forest signed striker Igor Jesus for €20 million and defender Jair Cunha for €12 million. Left-back Cuiabano may be next.
As European clubs circle, the post-World Cup market is proving to be a test of endurance—and ambition—for Brazil’s top teams.
