Bradley Carnell Praises Olwethu Makhanya After Impressive MLS Debut

Philadelphia Union's 2025 Major League Soccer (MLS) season began with a 4-2 victory over Orlando City SC, marking a good debut for new head coach Bradley Carnell and newcomer Olwethu Makhanya.

Tai Baribo, an Israeli striker, led the onslaught with a brace, while Daniel Gazdag and Mikael Uhre scored for Union. Orlando City's Marco Pašalić scored both goals, but it was not enough to prevent Carnell's team from winning their first game of the season.

Makhanya Makes His Mark

Olwethu Makhanya also made his eagerly anticipated senior debut during the game. After joining Philadelphia from Stellenbosch FC in 2023, the 20-year-old South African defender played 31 games for the reserve team the previous season.

Playing alongside Jakob Glesnes in central defense, Makhanya impressed his coach despite a nervy start.

“…It was great seeing Olwethu Makhanya out there playing the way we wanted. It took him a while to settle in, but he eventually got it right, and I’m confident in him,” Carnell said after the match.

Makhanya demonstrated his talent at the highest level by completing 81% of his passes and making one important block, per the club's statistics.

What’s Next for Philadelphia Union?

After finishing 23rd in the league last season, Philadelphia Union is aiming for a more competitive campaign under Carnell, who took over from Jim Curtin two months ago.

Union now turn their attention to their next fixture on Sunday, March 2, when they face FC Cincinnati, home to former Kaizer Chiefs defender Teenage Hadebe.

With a solid debut under his belt, Makhanya will be looking to cement his place in the starting lineup as Philadelphia Union pushes for a stronger MLS season.
