Irish boxer John Cooney has been placed in intensive care following his featherweight title defense loss, reports The Sun. Cooney suffered a ninth-round defeat to Welsh fighter Nathan Hallowell.

Medical staff treated Cooney immediately after the fight, but after further assessment, he was transferred to a hospital for additional examinations.

Doctors later confirmed that the Irishman had suffered a brain hemorrhage, prompting an emergency surgery. He was then moved to the intensive care unit, where he remains under close medical supervision, fighting for his life.

"John’s fiancée Emaleen and his parents Hughie & Tina would like to thank everyone for their private messages of support, and would ask that they keep John in their thoughts and prayers at this time as he faces his toughest battle," read a statement from MDH Promotions.

Cooney originally won the featherweight championship in November 2023 by defeating Liam Gaynor. However, he was sidelined for nearly a year due to a hand injury and only returned to the ring in October 2024, securing a victory over Tanzanian boxer Tampela Maharuzi.
