Botafogo Lose Star Winger Savarino Ahead of Libertadores Clash vs La U
Botafogo will be without one of their standout players for their Copa Libertadores opener against Universidad de Chile. Venezuelan winger Jefferson Savarino has been ruled out due to injury and did not travel with the squad to Santiago, remaining in Brazil for medical tests, reports La Tercera and RedGol.
Savarino’s absence is a major blow for head coach Renato Paiva, who must now adjust his plans ahead of Wednesday’s Group A fixture. The former Real Salt Lake star has become a vital piece for Botafogo since arriving in 2024 and was even shortlisted for South America’s Best Player last season.
Speaking to AS Chile, Paiva showed respect for his opponents, highlighting Universidad de Chile’s three-at-the-back system and the presence of experienced players like Charles Aránguiz. “I respect them a lot, but I have zero fear,” he stated.
Botafogo’s trip to Chile marks the start of a challenging Libertadores campaign, with River Plate also part of their group. The match will be held on Wednesday, April 2, at 9:30 p.m. local time at Estadio Nacional — a crucial early test for the Brazilian side now forced to adapt without one of their key attacking threats.
