Boca Juniors Sparks Controversy With Social Media Post After Fan Protests
Boca Juniors stirred controversy on Sunday after releasing a social media video in response to heavy fan criticism during the team’s penalty shootout win over Lanús. The post, titled “Nosotros alentamos” (“We support”), featured scenic shots of La Boca and fans cheering in the stands, set to the song “Cielo de un solo color” by No Te Va Gustar. However, as Infobae reported, the gesture was seen by many as a veiled response to widespread chants against the club’s leadership and players.
Tensions flared at La Bombonera during Saturday’s match, which ended 0–0 after 90 minutes. Sections of the crowd first targeted the players and then directed their anger at the board led by Juan Román Riquelme. The chants of “que se vayan todos” (“they all must go”) underscored the deep rift within the fanbase.
The video post drew a flood of mixed reactions. While some applauded the club’s attempt at unity, others criticized it as tone-deaf and dismissive of legitimate frustrations. The divide among Boca supporters is now more visible than ever.
Interim manager Mariano Herrón addressed the issue post-match, acknowledging fan frustration. “We understand the supporters' anger, but we need to keep working to improve,” he said. Herrón also revealed he asked his players to trust themselves before the shootout, which Boca won 4–2.
Boca now prepares to face archrival Independiente in the quarterfinals of the Torneo Apertura, again at La Bombonera. While the date remains unconfirmed, the spotlight will not only be on the pitch—but also on the stands, where tensions remain high.
