Boca Juniors Passes Budget Without Funds for Bombonera Expansion
Boca Juniors’ Assembly of Representatives has approved the club’s 2025/26 budget without allocating funds for the long-awaited expansion of La Bombonera. As Olé reported, the measure passed with a predictable majority thanks to the ruling bloc’s dominance, but the absence of investment for the stadium sparked debate.
Despite repeated campaign promises and leaked plans said to be crafted by Cristian Riquelme, no concrete steps have been budgeted toward expanding the stadium, one of the club’s most pressing infrastructural goals. Officials stated that if a formal project emerges, an extraordinary assembly could be called to address it — though speculation points to a possible proposal closer to the 2026/27 electoral cycle.
The budget does include investments in Boca’s Casa Amarilla facilities: a new indoor arena, food court, basketball gym, and a dining hall for the women’s football team. The assembly also approved new transparency regulations and debated access policies to matchdays amid complaints about restrictive filtering for members.
Tensions ran high at the end of the session, with chants of support for club president Juan Román Riquelme countered by calls for unity from opposition members. Meanwhile, opposition figure Jorge Reale criticized the loss of 40,000 adherent members and highlighted concerns over the club’s increasing financial dependence on membership dues, which now account for 70% of total income.
