Benni McCarthy Aims for History as Kenya’s New Head Coach
`Former Manchester United coach Benni McCarthy has officially been unveiled as the new Kenya national team head coach, signing a contract until 2027. The 47-year-old will be assisted by Vasili Manousakis, with Moeneeb Josephs as goalkeeper coach and Pilela Maposa as performance analyst.
Why McCarthy Chose Kenya
Speaking at his unveiling, McCarthy emphasized transparency and ambition as key factors behind his decision to take the job.
“They are a new regime that is honest and open. In Africa, transparency has always been a challenge, but I was assured this would be different. My goal is to make Kenya one of the strongest teams in Africa,” McCarthy said.
Road to the 2026 FIFA World Cup
Kenya currently sits fourth in Group F with five points from four games, five points behind leaders Ivory Coast. With only the group winners qualifying automatically, McCarthy believes Kenya can still surprise many and secure a historic World Cup spot.
“Participating in the World Cup is one of the most special feelings in the world, and I want to give that experience to these players,” McCarthy told BBC Sport Africa.
His first games in charge will be a crucial away fixture against Gambia on March 16, followed by a home clash with Gabon on March 23.
A Legendary Career
McCarthy is one of Africa’s most celebrated footballers, having won the 2004 UEFA Champions League with Porto under José Mourinho. He also played for Ajax, Blackburn Rovers, and West Ham United, while holding the record as South Africa’s all-time top scorer with 31 goals.

Rebuilding Kenyan Football
Kenya has never qualified for a World Cup and recently emerged from a FIFA suspension due to governance issues. Now under new leadership, including vice president McDonald Mariga, the Football Kenya Federation is looking to rebuild, and McCarthy’s appointment signals serious intent.
“For me, it’s about giving Kenyan fans a team they can be proud of—one that fights for every ball and plays with passion,” McCarthy ended.
