Benin suffer heavy defeat against Argentina at the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup

The Amazons suffered a real disappointment on Tuesday 8 September at the Arena Katowice.

Having raised hopes last Saturday with a spectacular 2-2 draw against Mexico, Benin’s U-20 women’s team suffered a heavy defeat on 8 September during the matchday 2 of Group A at the FIFA Women’s World Cup taking place in Poland.

The Beninese side were humiliated by Argentina at the Arena Katowice. La Albiceleste dominated the match from start to finish, giving the Amazons no chance whatsoever, despite the fact that they had started the match well.

Argentina took the lead in the 14th minute. Vinhas capitalised on a corner to open the scoring at 1–0. Diz doubled Argentina’s lead 18 minutes later. She found the back of the net in the 32nd minute to make it 2–0. The Albiceleste took advantage of an opportunity to extend their lead before the end of the first half, making it 3–0.

After the break, Argentina showed no sign of letting up. Diz capitalised on a misjudged rush off her line by Benin’s goalkeeper, Larissa Saïzonou, to score the fourth goal, completing her brace in the match. Benin then conceded a penalty, which was converted in the 57th minute to make it 5–0.

Argentina sealed their victory for good in the 63rd minute (6–0), the 65th minute (7–0) and the 80th minute (8–0). This heavy defeat jeopardises Benin’s chances in the rest of the tournament, in which the Amazons are taking part for the first time in their history.
