Benfica is nearing the completion of the signing of a promising young defender from United

Benfica is close to signing the young defender Álvaro Fernández from Manchester United, as reported by journalist Fabrizio Romano.

According to sources, the 2003-born footballer is very close to reaching an agreement with the Portuguese club. Personal terms with the player have already been finalized, with only an agreement between the clubs remaining. It is noted that this may not be a permanent transfer but a loan deal. Negotiations are ongoing.

For reference, Fernandes previously played for the youth teams of Spanish clubs Racing de Ferrol, Deportivo La Coruña, and Real Madrid. In September 2020, he became a part of the Manchester United academy. In May 2022, he was recognized as the Reserve Team Player of the Year for Manchester United, earning the Denzil Haroun Award.

Later, on September 1, 2023, he embarked on a season-long loan to the Spanish club Granada. On September 18, 2023, he made his debut in La Liga, coming on as a substitute in the match against Girona.
