English side Aston Villa is on the brink of pulling off one of the summer’s most high-profile free transfers, as 31-year-old German midfielder Leon Goretzka could be on his way to the club.

Details: According to insider Matteo Moretto, negotiations between the parties are in the final stages. Goretzka is intrigued by Unai Emery’s project and is expected to give his final approval in the coming hours. After wrapping up an eight-year stint at Bayern, the midfielder is now a free agent, meaning the Birmingham club won’t have to pay a transfer fee.

Aston Villa is seeking reinforcements in midfield following the departures of Youri Tielemans and Enzo Barrenechea. Goretzka’s experience, physical attributes, and box-to-box skills perfectly fit Unai Emery’s tactical setup. Atlético Madrid, Juventus, and Milan were also in the hunt for the player, but the offer from the Birmingham side proved to be the most attractive.

In the 2025/26 season, Goretzka played 48 matches (2,350 minutes) for Bayern, scoring five goals and providing five assists. Over his eight years in Munich, he won seven league titles, three German Cups, and the Champions League trophy.
