In Leverkusen, at the BayArena, the local Bayer and Stuttgart competed for the German Super Cup. The "Pharmacists" won both the Bundesliga and the National Cup last season, so they faced the runners-up, Hennes’ team, for the trophy.

Bayer quickly opened the scoring thanks to Victor Boniface, who missed half of last season due to injury. The "Swabians" equalized just four minutes later, and at the end of the half, Bayer’s summer signing, Martin Terrier, let his team down by receiving a straight red card.

In the second half, Stuttgart capitalized on their numerical advantage and scored, but Bayer, in their usual style, avoided defeat in the final minutes. In the penalty shootout, their goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky became the hero, saving one of the opponent's shots. As a result, Xabi Alonso’s team won the German Super Cup for the first time in their history and completed a domestic treble this year.
