The sixteenth round of the Spanish La Liga will feature a pivotal match where the Spanish champion, Barcelona, will face Girona in an away fixture.

Barcelona secured the championship last season for the first time in four years. This season, the "Blaugrana" aren't faring poorly either. Though currently occupying the third spot in the standings, their four-point gap from the leader, Real Madrid, remains modest. With only one loss against Real this season and four draws against Getafe, Mallorca, Granada, and Rayo Vallecano, Barcelona remains competitive. In the Champions League, Barcelona found themselves in a relatively straightforward group with Porto, Shakhtar, and Antwerp, allowing them to secure an early berth in the knockout stages, rendering their final match against the Belgian club inconsequential.

Girona has emerged as a revelation this season. The club, based in the eponymous city near Barcelona, is participating in the top-tier Spanish division for only the fourth time. Their inaugural entry into La Liga was in the 2016/17 season, and after spending two seasons in La Liga, they were relegated to Segunda. However, after three years, they have made a resurgent comeback to the elite division. While finishing tenth in the previous season, their vigorous transfer activities have remarkably transformed their current footballing year. Girona has suffered only one loss against Real and two draws against Real Sociedad in the opening fixture and Athletic Bilbao in the penultimate one, positioning them jointly at the top with Real Madrid, with goal difference being the only distinction ahead of the Catalan club.

The Barcelona vs. Girona match is scheduled to take place on Sunday, December 10, at Barcelona's "Olympic Stadium," kicking off at 9:00 PM Central European Time.
