Barcelona has commenced negotiations for a new contract with midfielder Frenkie de Jong, as reported by journalist Nicolò Schira.

The Blaugrana have proposed an extension until 2028 for the Dutch national team player.

De Jong's current agreement with the Catalan club expires in June 2026. Earlier reports in the media suggested that De Jong would be asked to accept a reduction in his salary, which currently stands at 37 million euros per year. The player himself has publicly expressed his desire to remain at Barcelona for the long term.

Previously, Manchester United had shown interest in De Jong, and there were also links to PSG.

In the current season, the Dutch midfielder has featured in 25 matches for the Blaugrana across all competitions, scoring one goal.

Xavi's team currently occupies the third position in the standings of the Spanish La Liga. Today, the Blaugrana will face Getafe. The match is scheduled to kick off at 16:15 Central European Time.
