Barcelona footballer recognised as the best female athlete of 2023

Today in Madrid the annual Laureus sports award ceremony is taking place.

According to its results, the title of the best female athlete of 2023 was awarded to Aitana Bonmati, a footballer from Barcelona. The Spanish footballer surpassed Iga Swiatek (tennis), Shericka Jackson (short-distance running), Mikaela Shiffrin (downhill skiing), Faith Kipyegon (middle and long-distance running), and Sha'Carri Richardson (short-distance running).

Last year, Bonmati, along with the Spanish national team, won the Women's World Cup in football. Additionally, as part of Barcelona, she became the champion of Spain and triumphed in the Champions League. It was Bonmati who received the 2023 Golden Ball award.

In 2022, the Laureus award was received by Jamaican sprinter Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce.
