Barcelona have added RB Leipzig’s centre-back Castello Lukeba to their transfer shortlist following the departure of Ronald Araujo.

Details: According to Sport, the 23-year-old Frenchman—valued at over €30 million—has won the approval of both sporting director Deco and head coach Hansi Flick. The situation is further complicated by the uncertainty surrounding Jules Koundé’s future, and the Catalans are in urgent need of a defensive overhaul after Araujo moved to Liverpool on loan, with a €55 million buyout clause.

Barça’s interest in Lukeba isn’t breaking news—the Catalan club already held initial talks for the French defender earlier this summer. However, the competition promises to be fierce: left-footed centre-backs like Lukeba are in high demand, with Arsenal, Manchester United, Liverpool, and Tottenham all reportedly monitoring him as well. Leipzig aren’t eager to let their young star go, even though, according to German media, the club is open to negotiating a fee below the €80–90 million release clause.

Lukeba arrived at Leipzig from Lyon in the summer of 2023 and, in just three seasons, has established himself as one of the Bundesliga’s top young defenders. Last season, he made 26 appearances in the German top flight and scored a goal. His contract runs until 2029. Transfermarkt values the Frenchman at €50 million, significantly higher than the figures currently being discussed.
