Barcelona’s financial struggles in the post-COVID era are well-known, but the club recently came close to losing money due to a scam during the signing of forward Robert Lewandowski, and it took some time for the Catalan club to catch on.

Details: According to Cadena SER, during the summer 2022 transfer of Lewandowski, a fraudster posed as the Polish striker’s agent, Pini Zahavi, and requested a €1 million commission from Barcelona. The club was on the verge of transferring this amount to a Cypriot bank account when their own bank flagged suspicious activity on the account.

It was only after this alert that Barcelona reached out to Zahavi, who clarified that he had made no such request. Fortunately, Barcelona’s bank was able to reverse the transaction, keeping the funds safe.

Reminder: Lewandowski recently returned to Barcelona from Poland’s October international matches with an injury, causing concern among Barcelona fans.
