Bafana Bafana Face Goalkeeping Dilemma Ahead of World Cup Qualifiers
Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos could be without captain and first-choice goalkeeper Ronwen Williams for this month’s FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifiers.
Critical Matches Ahead
South Africa is set to host Lesotho at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium next Friday, before traveling to Ivory Coast to face Benin four days later. Winning both matches is vital for Bafana as they push towards qualification for next year’s World Cup in North America.
While goal-scoring will be a priority, Broos will undoubtedly prefer to have Williams in goal. However, the Mamelodi Sundowns shot-stopper has been sidelined with injury in recent weeks, casting doubt over his availability.
His fitness was expected to be assessed in Sundowns’ Nedbank Cup quarter-final clash against Sekhukhune United, but the game was postponed due to a stadium double-booking by SAFA for a U-17 Women’s World Cup qualifier.
Backup Options in Contention
If Williams is unavailable, Broos will have to turn to one of his three backup goalkeepers: Sipho Chaine (Orlando Pirates), Ricardo Goss (SuperSport United), or Sage Stephens (Stellenbosch FC).
Among the trio, Chaine appears to be the frontrunner. The Pirates goalkeeper played a crucial role in his club’s Nedbank Cup quarter-final victory over SuperSport United, saving two penalties to keep their title defense alive.
Chaine also featured in Bafana’s AFCON 2025 qualifiers, conceding two goals in a 3-2 victory over South Sudan. Although his debut wasn’t flawless, the 28-year-old has shown significant improvement, helping Pirates reach the CAF Champions League quarter-finals, where they will face MC Alger.
