Badr Benoun Set for Sensational Raja Return as Club Eyes Defensive Overhaul

Raja Club Athletic have pulled off a major coup ahead of the summer transfer window by reaching a verbal agreement to bring home Badr Benoun, one of the most revered defenders in the club’s modern history.
The 31-year-old Moroccan international, now a free agent after parting ways with Qatar SC, is poised to sign a two-year deal with the Casablanca-based club, according to reports from Kooora.
Return of a Legend
Before joining Al Ahly (Egypt) and then Qatar SC, where he made 15 appearances this season, Benoun established himself at Raja, helping the team win numerous domestic and continental championships.
Now, he’s ready to return—but not without terms:
- Strong financial guarantees
- Punctual salary payments
- Retention of key squad members
His demands reflect a commitment to stability and ambition as he rejoins a side under pressure to reassert its dominance in the Botola Pro and CAF competitions.
Club Tensions & Leadership Scrutiny
Benoun's return comes after the club's president, Abdellah Birwaine, was criticized by fans, especially after star scorer Houssine Rahimi moved for Al Ain (UAE) shortly after winning the 2024–25 league Golden Boot. Supporters who demanded more squad retention were incensed by the decision.
Defensive Reinforcements Continue
In addition to Banoun, Raja are also in advanced talks with Malian center-back Daba Sougouba of Djoliba AC, according to Al Mountakhab. The 23-year-old is being courted by other clubs, but Raja is leading the race.
Sougouba is viewed as a perfect complement to Benoun, with athleticism, strong aerial ability, and solid positioning—qualities that could give Raja a renewed defensive backbone.
Eyes on Titles
With a reshaped back line and Banoun’s leadership, Raja aim to return to title-winning ways both domestically and continentally, as they prepare for a pivotal 2024–25 campaign.
