Atlético Mineiro Look to Extend 10-Year Home Streak Against São Paulo
Atlético Mineiro will look to protect one of their most impressive recent records this Sunday when they face São Paulo at the Mineirão in the second round of the Brazilian league. The Belo Horizonte side hasn't lost at home to São Paulo since November 27, 2016, a streak that now spans nearly a decade. That last defeat came at Independência, when São Paulo won 2-1. Since then, Atlético have secured six wins and four draws as hosts, according to No Ataque.
Their dominance is even more pronounced at the Mineirão, where the club hasn't lost to São Paulo since 1991. In 15 matches at that venue, the Galo have collected seven wins and eight draws. The most recent meeting at the stadium was a dramatic 2-1 victory in 2023, sealed with a stoppage-time winner by Paulinho.
In total, Atlético are unbeaten in their last 10 games against São Paulo across all venues, with five wins and five draws. The last time São Paulo defeated Atlético was in 2020, a 3-0 win at the Morumbi that saw current Atlético midfielder Igor Gomes score for the opposition.
This weekend, Atlético aim to bounce back from a 2-1 opening loss to Grêmio, while São Paulo come off a goalless draw against Sport. With a packed Mineirão and history on their side, Atlético will be eager to continue their strong run against the Tricolor.
