Atlético Madrid Tracks Mastantuono, But His €45M Release Clause Stalls Move
Atlético Madrid has been monitoring Argentine talent Franco Mastantuono closely, sending scouts to watch the 17-year-old playmaker in River Plate's recent match against Rosario Central. Despite the draw, Mastantuono once again showed flashes of brilliance, drawing praise from manager Marcelo Gallardo, according to a report from Fichajes.com.
"Mastan has glimpses of being a different kind of player. We’ll continue supporting his development with the patience he deserves," said Gallardo, reinforcing River's belief in their young star. Mastantuono's skill set fits the profile sought by Diego Simeone: creative, versatile, and mature beyond his years.
However, despite the interest from Atlético, securing the midfielder's transfer appears to be highly complicated. River Plate has extended his contract until December 2026 and set a hefty €45 million release clause to ward off suitors.
According to Argentine journalist Sebastián Srur, the operation seems unlikely: "I don’t see it happening, even though Atlético scouts were at the Monumental. It’s nearly impossible, especially due to the value of the release clause."
While Atlético may continue tracking the teenager's progress, financial constraints make a deal improbable in the near future—unless River softens its stance or a record-breaking offer arrives. For now, Mastantuono’s path seems firmly rooted in Buenos Aires.
