Athletic Bilbao president disagrees with Real Madrid’s referee criticism
Real Madrid criticized the officiating in their match against Espanyol and filed a complaint with the Royal Spanish Football Federation. The situation did not go unnoticed by Athletic Bilbao’s president.
Details: Athletic Club president Jon Uriarte addressed the issue in a press conference, where he criticized Real Madrid’s complaint. He also recalled a controversial incident from last season’s match between Athletic and Real Madrid.
Quote: “We played at the Bernabéu in the final round of last season’s La Liga. Carvajal made a reckless tackle on Yuri and broke his fibula. We had to finish the match with one player less because we had no substitutions left, yet the referee only gave Carvajal a yellow card. We were fighting for a Champions League spot and didn’t qualify,” he stated.
Uriarte added that while everyone wants improvements in refereeing standards in La Liga, applying pressure the way Real Madrid does is inappropriate.
Reminder: The Royal Spanish Football Federation has already responded to Real Madrid regarding their request for a VAR review.
