AS Maniema Union Rallies Behind Coach After Controversial Match
Following a contentious match against Mamelodi Sundowns at Stade des Martyrs, AS Maniema Union has confirmed its support for head coach Papy Kimoto Okitankoyi. Fans threw missiles at Kimoto during the CAF Champions League Group B match after Maniema Union's 2-1 loss ended their chances of making it to the quarterfinals.
In an official statement, the club condemned the actions of hostile supporters and pledged to work harder for a comeback next season. “We fully support coach Papy Kimoto Okitankoyi, who has proven his capabilities through his remarkable records. AS Maniema Union sportingly accepts this defeat and remains committed to returning stronger,” the statement read.
The Congolese team praised its players for their talent and perseverance, which had won praise around the continent, despite the defeat. Jephté Kitambala's goal in the first half gave Maniema the lead, but he gave up two goals, including an own goal, to let Sundowns advance to the next round.
Maniema Union, who now have three points and are at the bottom of Group B, promises to bounce back and strive for better outcomes in next tournaments.
