Arsenal hosted Newcastle at the Emirates in the first leg of the EFL Cup semifinal.

The first half saw chances for both teams, with Arsenal’s Gabriel Martinelli squandering a golden opportunity. The Brazilian went one-on-one with the goalkeeper but struck the post.

Newcastle, however, capitalized on their chance. In the 37th minute, Alexander Isak found the back of the net, marking his 50th goal for Newcastle across all competitions.

Early in the second half, Arsenal pushed hard to level the score but ended up conceding again. Anthony Gordon doubled the Magpies' lead in the 51st minute. Despite their efforts, the Gunners failed to respond.

The second leg will take place in Newcastle on February 5. The other semifinal sees Tottenham facing Liverpool, with the first leg scheduled for Wednesday, January 8.
