Arise, Sir Harry! UK government hints at extraordinary honour for Ballon d'Or winner
Harry Kane could be heading towards another extraordinary honour! Just one day after becoming the first English footballer in 25 years to win the Ballon d'Or, the Bayern Munich striker has been mentioned as a potential candidate for a British knighthood.
Details: According to ITV News and The Guardian, Downing Street addressed the possibility of Kane receiving a knighthood on October 27. A spokesperson for Prime Minister Andy Burnham praised the England captain's immense contribution to football and described his Ballon d'Or victory as an extraordinary achievement. However, she declined to anticipate the official honours process. No nomination or decision to knight the player has been confirmed.
Kane received the 2026 Ballon d'Or at London's Palladium Theatre on October 26, becoming the first English winner since Michael Owen in 2001. The 33-year-old scored an astonishing 73 goals for Bayern Munich and England during the 2025/26 campaign, helping the German club secure a domestic treble. He finished ahead of Kylian Mbappé and Lamine Yamal in the voting.
The striker already holds an MBE, awarded following England's run to the 2018 World Cup semifinals. A knighthood would represent a considerably higher distinction and allow him to use the title Sir. British football legends including Stanley Matthews, Bobby Charlton, David Beckham and Gareth Southgate have received the honour.
It's worth noting that knighthoods are not awarded automatically for sporting success. Candidates undergo an established honours process, and recommendations can come from government departments or members of the public. Kane's historic Ballon d'Or victory has strengthened the discussion, but whether he eventually becomes Sir Harry remains uncertain.
Reminder: Official: Harry Kane wins the 2026 Ballon d'Or!
