Argentina Marks Two Years as FIFA No. 1, Joins Historic Ranks at the Top Argentina Marks Two Years as FIFA No. 1, Joins Historic Ranks at the Top

Argentina has now spent two full years at the top of the FIFA world rankings, a milestone it reached after winning the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. The reigning champions remain first with 1,886.16 points, ahead of Spain (1,854.64) and France (1,852.71), and have joined the ranks of the five longest-reigning national teams since the ranking system was established in 1993.

Only Brazil (with two reigns), Belgium, and Spain have enjoyed longer spells at No. 1. Led by Lionel Scaloni and captain Lionel Messi, Argentina has recently defeated both Uruguay and Brazil in World Cup qualifying matches. These results have widened their lead and strengthened their case as the world’s top national team—and a frontrunner heading into the 2026 tournament.
