Antigua GFC Stuns Municipal With Last-Minute Comeback to Win Fifth National Title

Antigua GFC pulled off a dramatic comeback to defeat Municipal 2-1 at El Trébol on Sunday, claiming their fifth Guatemalan league title in a thrilling Clausura 2025 final. As reported by ESPN, Mauricio Tapia's side struck twice from set pieces to overturn the match and silence a packed home crowd.
Municipal had taken the lead in the 23rd minute through John Méndez and dominated the first half, nearly doubling their advantage before halftime. But Antigua stayed in the game and found the equalizer in the 72nd minute when José Ardón headed home from a corner. In stoppage time, Dewinder Bradley sealed the title with a decisive header in the 95th minute.
The final whistle triggered wild celebrations from Antigua’s squad, while Municipal players left the field dejected. The post-match tension escalated when Municipal coach Sebastián Bini was seen on video assaulting Antigua staff member Jorge Gramajo, a former Municipal goalkeeper coach. The incident may result in disciplinary action from the league.
Adding to the controversy, Municipal also faces potential sanctions after fans threw objects at the Antigua team bus before the match.
With the title, Antigua GFC also secured a spot in the upcoming Concacaf Central American Cup. For coach Mauricio Tapia, it marked another victory over Municipal in a final, reinforcing his legacy at the club.
