Another scandal at the Olympics. The organizers mixed up the anthem of South Sudan
Just two days after the opening ceremony of the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, several controversies have already occurred at the competitions.
Yesterday, it was reported that during the opening ceremony, athletes from the Republic of Korea were mistakenly introduced as representing the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. This incident led to senior officials of the International Olympic Committee issuing apologies.
Today, another controversy unfolded at the Olympics. During the continuation of the basketball competition, Puerto Rico was set to face South Sudan in Group C.
However, during the traditional playing of the national anthems, the organizers mistakenly played the anthem of Sudan instead of South Sudan.
South Sudanese fans in attendance quickly expressed their displeasure, waving flags and shouting until the incorrect anthem was stopped. While organizers searched for the correct anthem, the entire Pierre Mauroy Stadium erupted in applause to show solidarity with the South Sudan team and its supporters. Even the players from the Puerto Rico team joined in the support.
South Sudan gained independence from Sudan in 2011 following a referendum and has its own distinct anthem. These countries have a long history of conflict. Despite gaining independence, disputes over borders, resources, and political power continue, leading to periodic clashes and instability in the region.
It is worth noting that these Summer Olympic Games are the third in the history of South Sudan, and the country is participating in basketball for the first time.
