Angola Hosts World Champions Argentina in Historic 50th Independence Anniversary Clash
Angola will take on World Cup holders Argentina in a special international friendly at the Estadio 11 de Novembro in Luanda on Friday — a fixture marking the country’s 50th year of independence.
For Angola, the game is more than just a friendly. It’s a moment of pride and celebration for both the team and its fans. The Palancas Negras come into the match on the back of improving form, with recent World Cup qualifiers yielding a 0-0 draw against Cameroon and a 2-2 result with Eswatini. Their only recent win came in September when they defeated Mauritius 3-1.
Argentina, meanwhile, arrives in top form after three wins in their last five outings, including a 6-0 thrashing of Puerto Rico and a tight 1-0 victory over Venezuela. Coach Lionel Scaloni is expected to rotate his squad and test new players but insists his team will “stay sharp” and maintain momentum ahead of the Finalissima and World Cup.
The two sides have met only once before — in May 2006 — when Argentina triumphed 2-0. Nearly two decades later, Angola will look to score their first goal against the Albiceleste and possibly record a historic result at home.
Angola coach Pedro Gonçalves is likely to field his strongest lineup, with captain Fredy anchoring midfield and Mabululu leading the attack. There are no major injury concerns for the hosts.
For Argentina, Scaloni will miss Julián Álvarez, Nahuel Molina, and Giuliano Simeone — all absent due to missed vaccination deadlines — while Emiliano Martínez is rested and Enzo Fernández remains injured. Uncapped players Kevin Mac Allister, Máximo Perrone, Nicolás Paz, and Joaquín Panichelli are set to feature, with Lionel Messi expected to play at some point.
